Will This Euphorbia Ritchiei Ever Grow Leaves Again?
What’s the Issue?
The Euphorbia ritchiei produced a leaf, unfortunately it got accidentally broken off and now it’s bare. Is it likely to grow back?
Understanding the Situation
Please don’t be alarmed, the African native desert plant is unusual in that it produces thick leaves along its ridged stems throughout its active phase, then frequently sheds them during colder months. Originating from Kenya, precipitation is seasonal. The plant adapts by producing foliage during rains, then dropping its leaves when water is scarce to conserve moisture and resources. Its photosynthetic stems continue to photosynthesise so the plant can survive leafless for extended durations.
Prescription
To encourage new leaves, it thrives on strong, bright light; place it in the sunniest location indoors you have, like a sun-drenched windowsill, or supplement with a grow light. Warmth will additionally stimulate leaf growth, so maintain it in a steadily heated space. When the soil is completely dry, drench deeply until you see water drain from the drainage holes. Carry this out in spring and summer when the plant is actively growing. During dormancy, cut back on watering, as this is its dormant season. A diluted cactus fertiliser throughout the growing season will help support vigorous foliage.
Long-Term Care
Learn this plant’s natural rhythm; leafless in winter, foliage-rich in warmth. Avoid the urge to water excessively when it’s dormant, as this can damage the root system. Treat it as a natural pattern, with the return of sunlight and warmth in spring, the plant will likely sprout leaves once more.
